Profiles - The people in our region appearing in 'Windale Community Newsletter' by R A Pace! Our neighbours are ordinary people that have extra ordinary intentions toward each other.
These intentions often include groups of people who endeavour to brighten the lives of others, or fill the shortfall where our community has need. This is not only achieved by community groups, but also businesses in our community such as the efforts of Lake Macquarie Tavern.
In March the licensee Fay Thompson and her 29 willing and supportive staff organised the Dean James fund raiser to which hundreds of our community and people from the surrounding suburbs responded generously with their support to raise assistance for his widow and child.
This it seems is only the beginning of their community response.
‘Project Hopscotch’ is their new non profit, ongoing benefit program being offered to local schools to provide funds for areas of need through raffles and other fund raising projects.
The newly refurbished family venue has implemented plans to support the local school communities from Mount Hutton, over to Gateshead and Windale. Fay and her staff will offer and discern areas of need and attempt to supplement what can be fund raised for donation. In April she and her support team were delighted to be able to make a presentation to Mount Hutton school of sporting goods for the children’s activities.
Fay who has worked in the bottle shop at Lake Macquarie Tavern since 1985, recognises these areas are the shared responsibility of local business in the community, giving back in ways that will assist the children of the area, and bring pride to our children’s future achievements whether it be in sport, life skills, or academic.
Lake Macquarie Tavern has become, since the new licensee took over two years ago in May 2005, a stylish, modern, and popular venue for family functions that presents an interesting menu from the new bistro. The Chef caters for all tastes with Chef specials as well as popular old favourites.
The tavern also offers free activities where parents and children can comfortably socialise and have fun with ‘Karaoke’. Plus for the adults there’s ‘Texas Hold ‘em Poker’ which has become one of Australia’s most popular pastimes for everyone to enjoy, and of course for the competitive there’s the pool competition & all activities to be found in modern licensed venues.
The family friendly atmosphere accounts for the improved popularity of the Tavern with its convenient location to Lake Macquarie Fair, and the staff look forward with anticipation to their busy times with all the friendly faces they now serve on a regular basis. Most of all they look forward to extending ‘Project Hopscotch’ as an integrated community effort and are determined to continue the effort of Lake Macquarie Tavern as a community minded business.
